Instagram Changes Are Here to Stay

Updated: Aug 16, 2022

As you are likely aware, social media channels are notorious for making changes without any warning. Instagram is no exception. If you noticed changes on Instagram lately, you aren't alone. Some of the more noticeable ones are:

1. Full Screen Feed

2. Increase in Videos

3. Recommendations in Home Feed

Head of Instagram, Adam Mosseri, says the full screen feed is still in "test mode" so there is still some work to be done there. The company also explained that the shift to more video was inevitable but that photos will continue to be a major foundation of the app. The recommendations you now see in your home feed is Instagram's way of staying committed to creators and helping them reach a wider audience.

Many famous influencers, like the Kardashians, have publicly criticized Instagram for these changes and have millions of followers who agree. Change.org even has a petition out to "Make Instagram Instagram Again" with over 200,000 signatures.

Whatever your opinion, Instagram is pushing forward with the changes. Why? Because most of these changes are naturally happening anyway and, let's be honest, Instagram has engagement stats that show the changes are keeping users on the platform longer. Those numbers logically guide decisions made by Instagram.

Additionally, Instagram says they are working on a process that prioritizes the kind of content each user prefers to interactive with. So, those who tend to like photos more will see photos in their feed more than video.

And a heads up from Nick Cicero (VP of Conviva and who built analytics for Snap, IG Stories, Facebook Live, and TikTok)::

Keep that in mind when you're looking at your and your clients' analytics.
